First Faith-Based UTC at World Urban Forum

By Dwight Friesen

Yesterday, Feb. 10th, was the first time the multifaith engagement of the UN-Habitat Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda was offered back to the World Urban Forum.

This important multifaith work, led by Urban Shalom Society to give everyone a voice, including the Christian community, has been taking place at Urban Thinkers Campuses all over the world over the last few years, and yesterday the conversation landed on a truly global stage.

With more than 80% of the world’s population living with a significant religious worldview it is vital that the UN explore – with intention – ways of mobalizing people and communities toward its SDGs through the values, beliefs, and narratives of the world’s faith traditions.

Not only are the majority of people on the planet are still motivated by a faith tradition; but each religion and spirituality offer unique perspectives on human flourishing which can activate people to change because of their faith rather than in spite of their faith.

It’s so cool that for the first time a “Faith Forward” conversation has a voice in the World Urban Forum.

Thank you to all the organizers, presenters, participants, sponsors, Abu Dhabi, and to UN-Habitat for facilitating this important faith conversation toward a thriving cities/bio-regions and a sustainable planet.
